For The Love of Purple

Purple is one of my favorite colors for spring decor, but it can also be used year round if you’re making a more permanent change. I usually go with a more pale shade of the hue, but if you’re more daring in your color choices, a bolder shade is amazing too. This color is really making a comeback in design and we’re guessing that with the passing of the beloved musical icon that gave us “Purple Rain” we’ll be seeing this color show up even more.

Purple is a color that is traditionally associated with royalty. A little history- this is because in ancient times, the dye was extracted from mollusks and therefore insanely expensive. Today, deep shades of purple still give off a luxurious vibe, but softer shades like lavender are soothing and make us feel at peace. Funny how colors have meanings and trigger different emotions in us. Which is why choosing color palettes for our homes is such a personal process.

Choosing a darker, vivid shade of purple for a room can evoke passion, so using it in a master bedroom is fantastic. Eggplant, violet, plum and wine are all great choices. It doesn’t have to be all over the walls, but try adding accents of the shade.

This bedroom adds a pop of purple with pillows against a neutral gray background. For a pulled-together look, repeat the purple somewhere else in your space, like in a piece of artwork. The purple will make a statement, but not be overpowering.

If you want to add an even more romantic touch to your room, try creating an accent wall with a gorgeous deep grayish purple like the bedroom below. In this space they have also added purple lampshades, pillows and artwork to make the color the focus. Inviting, isn’t it? In both spaces there is definitely a modern vibe, but oh so luxurious and cozy.

If a softer shade of purple is more your speed, lilac, lavender and orchid are all amazing and have an essence of calm and tranquility. These purples aren’t just for little girl’s bedrooms anymore. Bathrooms and other spaces that are seen as retreats are perfect for a touch of soft purple. Take the below bathroom for example. Can’t you see yourself relaxing in that clawfoot tub with a good book for hours just washing away the day. It’s easy to relax in a room that feels and looks like a spa. The addition of the white just adds to the clean, freshness of this space.
